Understanding Kidney Failure in Horses

Horses with kidney deficiencies may experience weight loss, fluid retention, and a drop in energy levels, among other symptoms. Traditional methods of managing renal problems frequently include fluid management, dietary adjustments, and occasionally, medication. Alternative methods, such as Equiscope protocols, might, nevertheless, provide additional support in enhancing kidney function and general health.

Bikini’s Journey: Addressing Edema and Kidney Function

Bikini, a 22-year-old gelding, had been gradually losing weight and stocking up in her legs, which were symptoms of renal failure. His system had trouble regulating fluids, which resulted in edema, especially beneath his left lung, even though he had a strong appetite. In search of a non-invasive method, his owner researched the Equiscope protocols, a microcurrent procedure that could promote circulation and cellular activity.

1. First Protocol Session (11/6/23)

  • Assessment:
    • Bikini was calm but lethargic, and she had significant edema.
    • Edema under the left lung was seen to be front tracking.
    • Supporting renal function and addressing fluid retention were the goals.
  • Protocol Plan:
    • Frequencies applied: Mode 1 (.5/2/5/5/8/10/40) and Mode 2 (.5/2/4/8/10/40).
    • Intensity set at 600.
    • Plates were used for application.
    • Duration: Two (2) minutes.
  • Post-Session Observations:
    • Bikini went straight to eating after appearing more at comfortable.
    • He lay down and rolled after eating and drinking, something his owner hadn’t saw him do in quite a while.

2. Second Protocol Session (11/7/23)

  • Assessment:
    • Bikini showed more energy, but there hasn’t been any noticeable decrease in edema yet.
    • He had switched to a grass diet and was eating and drinking well.
  • Protocol Plan:
    • Frequencies: Mode 1 (.5/2/5/5/10/40) and Mode 2 (.5/2/4/10/40).
    • Intensity adjusted to 600 for Mode 1 and 400 for Mode 2.
    • Plates and trigger probes were used.
    • Duration: 12 seconds.
  • Post-Session Observations:
    • During the session, Bikini had three bowel movements and whickered once.
    • During protocol, the heart rate stayed constant at 36 BPM, slowly decreasing to 41 BPM.

3. Third Protocol Session (1/8/24)

  • Assessment:
    • Leg edema has decreased significantly, particularly on the left side.
    • The amount of edema beneath the left chest had been reduced in half.
  • Protocol Plan:
    • Frequencies: Mode 1 (.5/2/5/5/10/40) and Mode 2 (.5/2/4/10/40).
    • Intensity at 600 for both modes.
    • Plates were used for application.
    • Duration: Two (2) minutes.
  • Post-Session Observations: Bikini was relaxed and at ease the entire time.

Looking Ahead

Bikini’s case illustrates how Equiscope protocols can offer further assistance to horses with kidney-related problems. The non-invasive microcurrent technology may aid in the management of fluid retention and advance the overall well-being of horses. His development will be tracked and supported in subsequent sessions.
